Antisthenes, an ancient Greek Cynic philosopher, said that “I do not possess, in order not to be possessed” . As such he dressed in rags innapropriate even for a beggar.
And so once, Socrates, who generally agreed with his philosophy, said to him:

“I can see your vanity, Antisthenes, through the holes in your cloak.”
